Job Description Summary
The Advanced Lead Controls Systems engineer is responsible for the design, development and verification of engine control logic, application software development, and hardware interfaces. In this role, you will have the critical responsibility of supporting the fielded rotorcraft fleet for military and commercial customers. You will help invent the future of flight, integrating GE Aerospace turboshaft engines with new aircrafts, including novel vertical lift vehicles such as the recently announced: Hybrid-Electric Demonstrator (HEX). In addition, this team supports the fielded military turbofan market developing and integrating designs with US and foreign military customers. You will be on the front line for control systems, ensuring GE Aerospace engines perform safely, efficiently and robustly, while you gain hands-on expertise that will last a lifetime.
The Advanced Lead Control Systems Engineer will utilize prior experience or expertise to develop and execute objectives for self and others and execute engineering plans for aircraft engine control systems. They will lead one or several of the following areas: propulsion system simulations and transient analysis; classical, multivariable and adaptive control algorithm design; statistical analysis on gas turbine engine cycle parameters; signal processing, fault detection and accommodation; airframe and engine systems integration and requirements derivation for engine controls.
Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities
Execute the analysis, design, test, and integration activities using sound engineering principles and business standards, practices, procedures and product/program requirements to deliver engine controls solutions for GE Aerospace product. Activities include:
Evaluate the functional requirements and provide technical leadership to achieve the operational requirements for vertical-lift (rotorcraft) or fixed-wing engine applications.
Design, implementation, and testing of closed loop control systems for aviation engine applications.
Implement embedded engine software compliant with software plans and standards.
Work with military and commercial customers as well as airframe manufacturers such as Sikorsky, Leonardo, Bell, Boeing and foreign military service partners in defining requirements.
Define key characteristics of the electronics, fuel, hydraulic systems, sensors, actuators and control logic design required to achieve the functional requirements.
Perform linear analysis and non-linear simulations to evaluate aircraft, engine and component control system response.
Leverage experience with software tools such as Beacon, NPSS, SCADE, MATLAB and Simulink to construct and test controls system solutions
Define and/or implement automation solutions for optimizing productivity in the development workflow for controls software solution development.
Verify system operation through desktop simulation, hardware-in-the-loop lab tests (electrical dry rigs and hydraulic wet rigs), ground engine test and flight test.
Assure proper documentation of technical data generated is consistent with engineering policies and procedures while delivering control system certification reports for the US Military, US FAA and EASA.
Participate and lead process standardization and GE Lean Simplification efforts that improve productivity, quality and speed required to deliver world class control solutions to GE Aerospace customers.
Provide timely communications on significant issues or developments.
Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college
A minimum 5 years experience in a related engineering position
Desired Characteristics
Proficiency with real time control systems development tools (e.g. DOORS, Beacon, Matlab, Simulink, NPSS, Change & Synergy) and processes for requirements & logic design, simulation and validation at the hardware in the loop environment, engine and flight tests levels
Experience with software languages in the definition or implementation of automation, such as Python, C++, Visual Basic
Experience with formal software or systems development processes and standards, such as DO-178
Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering and Development or standards, such as DO-331
Experience with digital communication protocols, such as Mil Std 1553, AFDX, ARINC429, RS485 and CAN bus
Experience with controls software verification testing and/or closed loop engine testing
Knowledge of reliability analysis, FMEAs, fault trees and engine condition monitoring
Strong teamwork, communication, and documentation skills
This role is restricted to U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to export-controlled technology. GE will require proof of status prior to employment.
