About Us The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation's naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy's submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. Job Description Fleet Power Plant Engineering is seeking engineers to join the VIRGINIA Class Instrumentation and Control (I&C) systems group. This position offers experience in new construction support, fleet support, testing of designs, developing maintenance and procedure improvements, data analytics, and development of systems and operations knowledge. As a senior or principal engineer, you will be responsible for your own cognizant systems but also be responsible for leading larger projects. You will develop strong systems engineering skills and be provided opportunities to support the project and the broader electrical community through challenging work assignments, mentoring, and training opportunities. Specific responsibilities may include: Prioritize and manage tasks to ensure proper technical project management and integration of work to ensure technical deliverables meet schedules and budgets Review and provide feedback on work to ensure quality and develop team Mentor team to support technical and leadership development Provide succinct summaries, both oral and written, of work and work issues Facilitate a strong and productive teaming environment between organizational units at NNL, NR, BPMI, Shipyards Resolution of operating fleet and shipyard technical issues Support construction of VIRGINIA Class submarines Support I&C system and equipment design changes (develop functional requirements and conceptual designs, review design changes, update design documentation, develop and improve operation and maintenance procedures, perform compatibility testing, and support installation and operation) Make written technical recommendations in formal correspondence and perform technical reviews of recommendations Develop procedural improvements to support VIRGINIA Class I&C equipment Drive efforts to reduce maintenance Work on data analytics of fleet data Drive innovation initiatives that help to improve reactor I&C Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of six years of relevant experience or; MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience or; Currently or previously Shift Supervisor Part I qualified or EDO and two years as EOOW in the Nuclear Operations Program or Three years as SRE plus Watch Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and Fuel and Barrier Shift Supervisor (ECF only) or SRE qualified and six years of experience Preferred Skills The preferred candidate will have previous experience with some of the following: Leadership in project management Effective verbal and written communication skills Effective interpersonal and teaming skills An action oriented can-do approach that demonstrates initiative and ownership Strong attention to detail Instrumentation troubleshooting Experience in Naval Nuclear Propulsion with working knowledge of naval nuclear plant operations, testing and maintenance Reactor Plant Instrumentation and Control or Electric Plant experience Power Plant Engineering experience Nuclear Plant operations experience All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, or disability.
