Overview

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is seeking an Assistant State Fire Marshal. This position will primarily be responsible for conducting existing residential building inspections for compliance with the Vermont Rental Housing, Health and Safety Code. Inspections will be conducted in response to complaints alleging unsafe or unhealthy living conditions. The successful candidate is expected to work with other state and local partners to establish a network of resources to assist in mitigating sub-standard living conditions. Duties will also include educating landlords and tenants about safety and health standards while creating resources to assist tenants and landlords in identifying responsibilities. Fire inspector certification is preferred.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in both standard office and field settings. Class incumbents may encounter a wide range of physical conditions while inspecting buildings or construction sites. Considerable travel is required for which private means of transportation be available. Strong and differing opinions will be encountered on a regular basis. Emergencies may require work outside of normal work schedule. Field duties may require work in contaminated environments which may require protective clothing and equipment.
