Summary All Aerodynamic Design Engineers at Ingersoll Rand are deeply involved with the marketing, design, and testing of the customized compressors made in a variety of global locations. The majority of the machines built by Ingersoll Rand are multistage machines with 2 to 6 aerodynamically optimized 5-axis milled impellers. It is a common practice for an individual Aero Engineer to be completely responsible for an application and to follow it through marketing, design and test. Ingersoll Rand's machines must compete globally on the cutting edge of compressor design. Extensive analytical effort is used to assure the mechanical and aerodynamic performance of the compressor. Further, a great deal of time is invested into developing code in a variety of languages for new tools to advance these efforts. Finally, with such equipment, customer questions are inevitable, and communication skill become critical, both with explaining normal operation and with trouble shooting. Research and Development Projects: Ingersoll Rand is committed to providing the most efficient products possible and we leverage our core aerodynamic expertise to develop leading technology for our products. We focus through our New Technology Introduction (NTI) process to ensure technology is well understood and ready for commercial market. We continually invest in latest software tools and have an extensive lab for validating designs or new ideas. We also have strong relationships with numerous universities and are continually seeking new opportunities to advance the state of the art in IGC compressor design. All new Aero engineers are called upon to participate in NTI as well as design work, with time allotted as design work load allows. Marketing support: In this function, the Aero Engineer directly interacts with the Marketing Application Engineer, Rotordynamic Engineers and Mechanical Design Engineers to select a compressor arrangement that meets the customer's performance requirements and is mechanically feasible. In this capacity, The Aero Engineer is responsible for generating machine performance characteristics that will be guaranteed to the customer. Design Responsibilities: Aero Engineers are individually assigned responsibility for the design of the aerodynamic components of a compressor. They directly interact with the Project Manager, Rotordynamic Engineer and Mechanical Design Engineers working on the compressor. In this function, the level of analysis includes using CFD calculations to design impellers and Low Solidity Diffusers for each stage. Occasionally customer interaction may be required during the design phase. Product Testing: Each Aero Engineer is responsible for defining the production test requirements of machines they have designed. The Aero Engineer will assist and trouble shoot problems on the production test stand, reduce the raw test data and meet with the customer to discuss the test procedures and results. When required, the Aero Engineer will be responsible for the design of test stand modifications to bring the compressor into the guarantee specifications. Software Development: The path to being able to execute cutting edge designs includes directly incorporating the latest technology into the design tools available to the aero engineer to generate optimized geometry for the customer's particular site conditions, in a time frame that can be completed in a normal design cycle of a new compressor. Coding efforts to allow incorporation of the latest geometry design innovations seamlessly into the design process to constantly improve design iteration cycle time and stage efficiency concurrently are at the heart of the strength of Aerodynamic design at Ingersoll Rand MSG, TA and NX design. Requirements BS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, MS preferred Must have demonstrated strong undergraduate course work in fluids, heat transfer, thermodynamics and numerical methods. Graduate level coursework focused on fluid mechanics, compressible flow, CFD is preferred. The applicant must have a strong command of the English language, and be capable of clearly communicating in writing and speaking with peers, leadership, and internal / external customers. Ingersoll Rand would find very helpful any Description of Modelling Software development (particularly scripting), and any relevant CFD analyses as used in novel designs. Previous work experience in the aerodynamic or mechanical design, or testing of centrifugal compressors is preferred. Work/School projects or courses involved with computer programming or demonstrated competency thereof is valued. The applicant should be a self-starter who can collaborate well across functional and geographic boundaries. The applicant shall be flexible to occasionally (<~5%) work during non-standard hours in order to provide support to global Ingersoll Rand locations. Experience with commercial engineering software and CAD systems such as Ansys, Numeca, CCM+, Cadence, Compal/Axcent, Dyrobes Teamcenter/NX is valued. Ingersoll Rand Inc.
