Position Purpose:

Collaborates with regional business leaders to shape internal and external communications strategies and solutions to meet business needs aimed at advancing the enterprise mission and business results. Partners with key stakeholders to strengthen alignment between business priorities and enterprise-wide strategy (structure, processes, systems) ensuring the development and advancement of an empowered, values-driven workplace culture. Advises and coaches senior leaders on communications strategies while developing, owning and executing communications strategies, plans and tactics to support the business.

A successful candidate will have a big picture mindset – integrating concepts from the region back to the broader Communications department and vice versa -- to develop robust strategies to promote and drive enterprise and business unit initiatives, while also implementing flawless tactical execution. Strong verbal, writing, editorial and public speaking skills are required to support a multi-channel approach focused on the delivery of an effective and quality communications program.

Principal Accountabilities:

  1. Exhibits and promotes integrity, respect and authenticity in all interactions internal or external to TVA Communications and in performance of assigned duties.

  2. Demonstrates strong collaboration, open-mindedness and partnership with teammates within and outside the TVA Communications organization.

  3. Enhances and protects the TVA reputation and brand; builds understanding and support for the agency’s long-term strategy and enterprise priorities.

  4. Accountable for modeling leadership behaviors, consistently delivering high-quality results and managing complex communications issues and projects for the agency.

  5. Serves as strategic communications counselor within the region, developing and implementing integrated, effective strategic communications plans that builds organizational capability and shapes the culture in support of achieving enterprise strategic objectives.

  6. Leads regional media relations, with a keen focus on proactive media positioning and outreach; serves as a company spokesperson; builds and sustains relationships with key regional reporters/outlets.

  7. Identifies and generates media opportunities for specific company initiatives through pitching story ideas, conducting media interviews and participating in external events.

  8. Manages complex, integrated issues; develops messages for internal and external audiences, including speechwriting/message preparation for regional vice president’s high visibility speaking engagements

  9. Oversees external positioning for the regional vice president

  10. Prepares presentations, talking points, briefing documents and other communication materials for key external and internal meetings.

  11. Develops and executes regional social media presence / content strategy aligned with enterprise social media strategy

  12. Creates and promotes content through a wide array of traditional, non-traditional and digital delivery channels.

  13. Fosters a culture of accountability, trust, collaboration, recognition, development, and results among staff at all levels consistent with the short and long-term objectives of the HR&C organization.

  14. Participates in a rotational media duty team for occasional after-hours media response and support.

  15. Serves as part of TVA’s crisis communications team and participates in storm/emergency response.

  16. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

    Minimum Requirements:

Education. – Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or closely related discipline

Experience. - 8+ years related work experience

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Excellent verbal, written and editorial communications skills

• Strong writer (Knowledge of AP style preferred), including experience preparing executive presentations, talking points, briefing documents and other communication materials for key external and internal meetings. Writing samples may be requested.

• Strong strategic communication skills

• Strong media relations experience serving as a spokesperson including strategy and message development

• Strong experience developing and implementing communications plans to effectively manage response to complex and emerging issues

• Experience working with senior levels of management and providing executive counsel and coaching for media interviews, presentations/speeches

• Proven track record of measurable results tied to strategic communications and planning efforts

• Experience representing the company externally with challenging audiences in challenging situations

• Ability to balance immediate and long-term priorities

• Proven ability to build trusted, sustainable relationships within the business and across the Communications department

• Experience and ability working alongside executives to coach and influence outcomes

• Demonstrated ability to make sound business judgments and drawing conclusions that ensure validity, identifies alternatives and develops specific recommendations

• Strong business acumen/business experience and continuous improvement methodologies

• Strong customer service, interpersonal and collaboration skills

• Ability to adapt to changes quickly, proposing and implementing thoughtful solutions

• Incumbent may be required to obtain and maintain a security clearance based on position / access requirements and essential job functions
