Eaton’s Research Lab (ERL) has an exciting and rewarding position as a Lead Engineer in Energy Systems to support research and technology development in power grid intelligence programs. This position will be based at our Golden, Colorado office.

Relocation assistance and future work visa application (e.g., H1B) will be provided if needed.

Position Overview:

As a key contributor to ground-breaking research at Eaton Research Labs you will be performing research and development into cutting edge power grid technologies with identification of market opportunities, implementation and demonstration in a realistic utility or critical facility environments. The successful candidate will be challenged with engaging in research programs on grid automation, cyber security and resiliency, power systems control, stability, and fault management.

In addition, you will support business case development and technology evaluation. This role also includes the participation in a highly visible internal and third-party government funding opportunity solicitation, application, and project execution.

As domain expert, the successful candidate will be able to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Specifically, external connections with universities, National Labs, utilities, and other research organizations as well as with Eaton’s business units globally serve as a key success factor.

Ability to concisely communicate sophisticated technologies to a variety of audiences (business leaders, technical and non-technical colleagues and peers), and a good blend of technical knowledge and business acumen are essential.

In this role you will:

  • Serve as a technical and/or project lead in technology development and demonstration.

  • Work and track on project milestones. Assigns roles and responsibilities for the project team members.

  • Participate in brainstorming sessions contributing to technology strategy development.

  • Contribute to the value proposition development for technical projects and programs.

  • Contribute to government proposal preparation and/or assist with project execution. May serve as technical lead in proposal preparation and/or owner of work package during project execution.

  • Support building business relationships by presenting ideas and projects, participating in ideation events and acquiring resources and funding needed.

  • Assist in the identification of leading external partnerships, outside technologies and best practices to bring to Eaton.

  • Participate in external open innovation events with universities and research institutes.

  • Develop as a subject matter expertise through active participation in conferences, seminars and/or consortium meetings in relevant industry to network and stay current on topics in their field.

  • Actively contribute to IP generation through authoring/co-authoring disclosures and patents.

  • Effectively apply appropriate processes, systems, and tools.

  • Mentor junior staff and consult internal business and engineering customers.

Qualifications

Required (Basic) Qualifications:

  • PhD degree or PhD candidate close to graduation from an accredited institution, OR

  • MS degree plus 3 years of industrial or entrepreneurial experience, OR

  • BS degree plus 5 years of industrial or engineering experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in at least two of the following areas

  • Electric power grid automation, especially distribution automation

  • Power grid control and optimization, especially with distributed/decentralized control approaches

  • Cyber security and cyber resiliency technologies applied to power systems

  • AI/Machine Learning and data analytics techniques applied to power grids

  • Power system analysis, protection, fault management

  • Microgrid control and management

  • Substation automation and communication (IEC 61850 GOOSE/Sampled Values, DNP3, IEC 62351, IEC 62443 series)

  • Experience in modeling power systems or cyber systems using simulation or reverse engineering tools (EMTP, PSCAD, NS-3, Ghidra)

  • Experience with real time simulators such as OPAL-RT, RTDS or Typhoon

  • Hands-on experience with field or lab testing of protection relays, grid automation and controllers is preferred.

  • Familiarity and experience with corporate research and development workstyle, technical presentation, idea proposing and project execution

The expected annual salary range for this role is $97,875- $143,550 a year.
