Overview

The Environmental Section at the Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is seeking a self-motivated and critical-thinking Civil Engineer to join our dynamic team of engineers, resource and permitting specialists working within a fast-paced, multi-faceted state agency. This position presents an exciting opportunity to combine a technical background with an environmental focus and involves providing environmental reviews of transportation projects and programs - from scoping to construction, with a concentration on impacts associated with hazardous waste and contaminated soils.

Duties involve complex tasks in the technical review and analysis of environmental data as it relates to projects, policies, and programs in a variety of regulatory, non-regulatory, and technical programs. It is expected that this position will review project plans for environmental investigation needs; coordinate environmental studies and collection of data, and collaborate on the preparation and review of Soil Management Plans and Corrective Action Plans and other associated contract documents.

The Environmental Team places a strong emphasis on the value of cross-training and this position provides additional opportunities for learning and development in other interest areas, such as operational and construction stormwater. Although this position will report to the Agency of Transportation\'s headquarters in Barre, VT, some remote work is possible. Nestled in the Green Mountains and located approximately 45 minutes from Vermont\'s largest city, Burlington, Central Vermont is a great place to live and work with excellent schools, plenty of cultural activities and amazing summer and winter recreation opportunities.

Environmental Factors

Duties are generally performed in both office and field settings for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards, and construction sites during all weather conditions and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.
